Our Bottle Tree

In the book Because of Winn-Dixie, Gloria Dump surprises Opal by showing her a bottle tree. Gloria’s tree is full of different kinds of bottles – “the ghosts of all the things I done wrong,” she says. On Friday, we decided to make a bottle tree symbolizing all of the things that we did right. Each child was asked to write down one good thing he or she has accomplished this year. They then rolled up their pieces of paper and placed them into their plastic bottles. These accomplished were then added to the tree outside of our classroom to remind us that we’ve all done something that we can be proud of. Ask your child when accomplishment they placed inside of their bottle. Also get them to give you a summary of what has happened so far in Because of Winn-Dixie, and what they think may happen next.

We Worship the One, True God!

Last week in Grade 4, we were studying Daniel 3, which deals with the image of gold and the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Since they all understood the story so well, we decided to take it on the road and perform it for a WeeCare class. Everyone did an amazing job and had a blast learning their roles and parts. Ask your child what they learnt from reading Danial 3 and having to perform the story.

Arawaks and Caribs Project

Dear Parents,

Fourth grade has been learning about the Caribs and the Arawaks for Social Studies. We have been learning about how they lived, how they built their huts, what they used for transportation, what tools they used to hunt with andso forth.

Our project now is to build a diorama or a model on some aspect of their life. This will be due on November 11, 2011. The word diorama refers to a three-dimensional model. One of the great things about a diorama is the variety of ways to display it. The Display is part of the fun and appeal of a diorama. Here are some ideas for making your diorama or model:

Ideas on the Subject of your diorama:

  • A Carib or Arawak hunting or fishing
  • A village
  • A scene with a Carib or Arawak lady cooking
  • A sea scene with Carib canoes or boats

Ideas on the Subject of your model:

  • A canoe
  • A hut
  • Pottery
  • A tool used to hunt or farm with (please note that your tool is not to include any sharp materials that can actually be used to hunt – we will use our imagination for this one)

Remember; do not feel limited to this list of idea. Encourage your children to get creative and have fun! I’m excited to see what they come up with.

Sincerely,

Ms. Suckoo

Because of Winn-Dixie: Vocabulary lllustrations

Today in English class, we finished reading chapters 1-5 in Because of Winn-Dixie.  So far, the class is really enjoying this book. We also started working on a vocabulary book where each student will look up the meaning to a word and illustrate it. See the kids hard at work below:

Inquiry Time!

Today in science, the class found a garden snail. They then observed it and recorded their findings. Parents, please ask your child what they were able to infer about whether or not this animal had a backbone.
