2nd Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

This week, we have a pretty long Bible verse, so I thought we’d try to something a little different this week. Here’s what we did:

We also went onto a few sites to give us a few beats. Please take a look at these and have some fun while learning this week’s Bible verse.

Honor Roll

Congratulations to everyone who earned an Honor Roll certificate this morning! Very well done! Keep up the stellar work!

To those who did not quite make it there, I say, keep working hard. You have all made me very proud, and the best is yet to come! 🙂

I Have a Dream…

Today, we took a bit of time to acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. Day in class. We watched two videos and had some discussions on why the US celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”  — Martin Luther King, Jr. / “I Have A Dream” speech, August 28, 1963

Input-Output Fun

For math this week, we’ve been covering Function Tables. Continue to remind your child/children to always look to the input column first, and then look to the output column to discover the rule (NEVER go input to input or output-output). Here is a fun link that we’ve practiced in class! There’s also a pretty groovy Granny on mathletics.com that helps with our function tables…look for Granny Crunch under Problem Solving.

To Water or Not to Water? That is the Question.

Last week, we began an experiment to observe the effects of water on plants. We have four, small, identical plants, sitting next to a window. Two plants will receive water, while the other two will not. We will observe the changes in each plant as the days pass.

Some questions to consider while doing this experiment:

1. Why do plants need water?

2. Why did we have to use four, identical plants?

3. Would placing plants in different containers help them?

English: – Identify adjectives that tell how many of what kind.

– Identify adjectives that follow the word it describes.

– Choose the correct articles.

Number the Stars:  Woohoo! We’re starting a new class novel for 2015. Here’s a brief overview of what Number the Stars is all about:

As the German troops begin their campaign to “relocate” all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

The novel was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1990 as the “most distinguished contribution to American literature for children”. Lois Lowry traveled to Copenhagen to conduct research and interviews for the book. You can read more about it here. I know this is quite a heavy topic, so we don’t delve fully into all of the horrors and monstrosities that took place during this dark time. Please also let me know if you have any questions of concerns.

Some of the learning objectives (or WALT as we refer to them in Grade 4; We Are Learning To) that we will cover while reading are:

    • Describe the characters’ traits, feelings, and motivations in Number the Stars.
    • Refer to the text for evidence to support answers.
