Students will: The Ickabog – Welcome! J.K Rowling has a new book out! https://theickabog.com/

I had the idea for The Ickabog a long time ago and read it to my two younger children chapter by chapter each night while I was working on it. However, when the time came to publish it, I decided to put out a book for adults instead, which is how The Ickabog ended up in the attic. I became busy with other things, and even though I loved the story, over the years I came to think of it as something that was just for my own children.

Then this lockdown happened. Its been very hard on children, in particular, so I brought The Ickabog down from the attic, read it for the first time in years, rewrote bits of it and then read it to my children again. They told me to put back in some bits theyd liked when they were little, and here we are! The Ickabog will be published for free on this website, in installments, over the next seven weeks, a chapter (or two, or three), at a time. It isnt Harry Potter and it doesnt include magic. This is an entirely different story.

The most exciting part, for me, at least, is that Id like you to illustrate The Ickabog for me. Every day, Ill be making suggestions for what you might like to draw. You can enter the official competition being run by my publishers, for the chance to have your artwork included in a printed version of the book due out later this year. Ill be giving suggestions as to what to draw as we go along, but you should let your imagination run wild. I wont be judging the competition. Each publisher will decide what works best for their editions. However, if you, your parent or your guardian would like to share your artwork on Twitter using the hashtag #TheIckabog, Ill be able to see it and maybe share and comment on it!

When the book is published in November, Im going to donate all my royalties to help people who have been affected by the coronavirus. Well give full details later in the year. I think thats everything you need to know. I hope you enjoy reading it and I cant wait to see your pictures!

Love, J.K. Rowling

(What are some of the plot events that will take place in the middle of the story? How will they help develop character and lead towards solving the problem?)

Review of the Sun and the first four planets of the Solar System. Review

  • The Universe is everything we can touch, feel, sense, measure or detect. It includes living things, planets, stars, galaxies, dust clouds, light, and even time.
  • There are 8 planets.
  • 7 of them are named after Roman gods.
  • All planets have different characteristics.

ACTIVITY 1:

Assessment Friday – The Sun, name and order of planets, first four planets. Learn the following facts:

  • Mercury is closest to the sun and is a small, heavily cratered planet. Mercury looks like our moon. Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and its atmosphere is very thin.
  • Venus is second from the sun.  It is similar to Earth in size and mass, and has a permanent blanket of clouds that traps thermal energy which causes high surface temperatures.
  • Earth is third from the sun. Earth’s atmosphere, the liquid water found on Earth, and its distance from the sun, among many other factors, make Earth a haven for life.
  • Mars is fourth from the sun. The atmosphere on Mars is thin and there is a vast network of canyons and riverbeds on the red planet. Mars is roughly half the size of Earth.

This week for our fitness unit, we are going to be focusing on hand-eye coordination.  Please complete BOTH exercises below.

Activity 1: Spoon Balance

  1. Ask a parent if you may borrow a wooden spoon.
  2. Find a stopwatch to use.  (You can find one on any smart phone or google search “stopwatch”.)
  3. You will be timing yourself to see how long you can balance a wooden spoon with two fingers. (See example on Seesaw.)
  4. Once you drop or catch the spoon, you must stop the time.
  5. Practice this for at least 5 minutes.  Then record your best time in the black boxes on this Seesaw assignment.   http://app.seesaw.me

Activity 2:  Spatula Keep Up

  1. Ask a parent if you may borrow a spatula.  Also find a scrap piece of paper and crumble it into a ball.
  2. Again, you will need a stopwatch to record your times.
  3. You will time yourself hitting the paper ball with the spatula.  Once the ball falls to the floor, stop the stopwatch.
  4. Choose what level you will do. (See examples on Seesaw)

a. Keep the spatula on the same side for the whole game.

b. Flip the spatula over each time you hit the paper ball.

  1. Record your level and best time on this Seesaw assignment.
