Factors and Multiples

We had a lot of fun learning about factors and multiples today in math! Here is a fun song that we listened to, to help us remember factors!

Here’s another nice link to review with your child:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/number/factors_multiples/read/1/

Be sure to ask your child what the definition for each are:

FACTORS

Factors are numbers you can multiply together to get another number: Example: 2 and 3 are factors of 6, because 2 × 3 = 6. A number can have MANY factors!

Example: Factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, 6 (1×6=6, 6×1=6, 2×3=6 and 3×2=6)

For larger numbers it is sometimes easier to ‘pair’ the factors by writing them as multiplications.

For example, 24 = 1 x 24 = 2 x 12 = 3 x 8 = 4 x 6

So the factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24.

MULTIPLES

A multiple is the product of two numbers multiplied together. For example, the first five multiples of 3 (your given number) are 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12.

Multiples are really just extended times tables. You can think of them as skip counting (starting with 0) by the number you are given.

Another example:

First 5 multiples 4 are:

0x4=0

1×4=4

2×4=8

3×4=12

4×4=16

So the first 5 multiples of 4 are 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16.

New Group Novel

the-tiger-rising

I just wanted to fill you guys in on a new novel that we’re reading during our ‘Silent Reading’ time…  Reading has really become a passion of ours in Grade 4, so as a means of ‘fanning that reading flame’, we are taking a few minutes each day to read ‘The Tiger Rising‘ by Kate DiCamillo. Since we are reading it as a class, they will also be able to get AR points from it once we’re finished. I want them to see the pure enjoyment of reading, so they will not be required to complete any graded book report.

It is really a lovely book, so feel free to ask your child about it in the evenings, or even take the plunge and read it yourself if you have the time. 🙂

Book Report Ideas

There are numerous ways to do a book report. Choose one method of reporting that interests you. It may be one of the ideas listed below, or an idea of your own. Be sure to see me if you are interested in using an idea of your own.

  • Create a Billboard
Advertise the book ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’, using poster board and drawing wooden frame on with a brown marker. Be sure to attach a written or typed detailed summary.
  • Make a ‘Comic Strip’
Show the action of the story by making sketches on long strips of paper using stick figures. Be sure to attach a written or typed detailed summary.
  • See What I Read?
This report is a visual one. A model or diorama of your favorite scene from the story can be created. Be sure to attach a written or typed detailed summary.
  • Favorite Scenes
Pick three scenes from the book and illustrate them on large pieces of paper. Be sure to include a sentence at the bottom of each picture describing the scene. Remember to attach a written or typed detailed summary.
  • Book Jacket
Fold a large sheet of white paper so that it looks like a book jacket. Create a cover for your book jacket that illustrates the novel. On the inside flap, write a description of the main character. On the inside back flap, write 3 journal entries as the character. Then, on the back cover, write a detailed summary of the story.

Thanksgiving Preperations

food

The fall season is upon us! Yay! That means that the weather should start to cool down (another YAY!) and also that it’s time to start collecting canned goods or non-perishable food items to donate to those less fortunate. Each class will be making a food donation on Wednesday, October 30, in our annual Thanksgiving Assembly, so please send in a canned good (or more, if you can spare). We will keep the collection in our classroom, until the assembly date.

Thank you so much!

Up Close and Personal with…Spores?!

We’ve been focusing on the life cycles of living things for science lately…from tomato plants, to ferns as well as insects and humans! Here are a few photos of us getting up close and personal to some spores that we found on a fern at school. The kids were really excited! I’ve also included a couple of our drawings/notes to help you quiz your child. 😉
