DRA ASSESSMENTS:

This week, FBCS students will sitting their DRA Assessments.

The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is a standardized reading test used to determine a student’s instructional level in reading. The DRA is administered individually to students by teachers and/or reading specialists. Students read a selection (or selections) and then retell what they have read to the examiner, either written or orally. This assessment requires no preparation and is simply a way for teachers to gain a deeper understanding of reading and writing skills of each student.

EXPOSITORY WRITING

Learning Objectives:

– Students will be able to add a conclusion to their project.

–  Students will be able to use transitions in their writing

SPELLING

– Study spelling words for test on Friday

BIBLE

– Unit 1 Bible Assessment – Wednesday, September 30 (Study notes were reviewed last week and sent home)

NUMERACY

Learning Objectives:

• Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number;

Focus in class:

• Last week on reading, writing and identifying numbers.
• Next week we move onto comparing whole numbers.

SCIENCE

Learning Objectives for the next few weeks:

• Plants and animals have different structures and processes for creating offspring.

Focus in class:

• Pollination – Self and cross pollination
• Recap of Photosynthesis

GRAMMAR

Learning Objectives:

– Identify the simple predicate of a sentence.

– Identify run-on sentences.

NOTE:

– Study for Unit 1 test – The Sentence, on Tuesday, 22 September

WRITING

Learning Objectives:

–  Students will be able to write their thesis statement and introduction.

– Students will be able to write a draft.

READING

Learning Objectives:

– To recognize the distinguishing features of expository non-fiction

– To use text features to aid comprehension

NUMERACY

Learning Objectives:

• Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number;

Focus in class:

• Read and writing whole numbers (Standard and word form)

SCIENCE

Learning Objectives for the next few weeks:

• Plants and animals have different structures and processes for creating offspring.

Focus in class:

• Plant reproduction and pollination (More detail in the video than they will be required to know)

GRAMMAR

Learning Objectives:

– Identify the simple predicate of a sentence.

WRITING

– Students will be able to narrow down their topic

– Students will be able to read about their chosen topic to learn more.

– Students will be able to read and take notes about their topic.

Grade 4 will finish off the reading of The Twits:

Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the smelliest, nastiest, ugliest people in the world. They hate everything—except playing mean jokes on each other, catching innocent birds to put in their Bird Pies, and making their caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, stand on their heads all day. But the Muggle-Wumps have had enough. They don’t just want out, they want revenge.

Learning Objectives:

– Identify cause and effect

– Analyze characters in the novel by identifying character traits and using textual evidence to support their ideas

– Form a deeper understanding of the book’s characters
