Dear Grade 4,

Your final writing project for the year will be to Write and Explain Instructions. Please ensure that the topic of your instructions is one that you are familiar with and will be able to teach to the class. Your instructions should be clear and concise. This project will be due on June 4, 2014.

You will be graded on your ability to:

1. Write detailed and accurate instructions to a task in sequential order, identifying the transitions as you go.

2. Explain instructions verbally to the class, using appropriate transitional words.

3. Edit your final draft and publish it neatly using the checklist to assist.

4. Work collaboratively and demonstrate their communication skills efficiently.

I am very excited to learn from you! Let’s end this year strong Grade 4!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Suckoo

Mathletics Fun continues

We’re trying to finish as much as we can on Mathletics before summer comes. 🙂 Please continue to remind your child to do some extra practice while they’re at home as well. Their passwords should be written down in their agenda.

Deviled Eggs Anyone?

For our final term in English, we’re learning how to write instructions. Last week, we followed a set of instructions and made Deviled Eggs! These turned out very yummy!

Today, we reviewed these instructions and wrote our own! I will be sending these instructions home for your child to teach you how to make our simply divine, deviled eggs! 🙂

Objectives and Homework for May 12 – 16, 2014

ENGLISH – This term, we are focusing on writing instructions. We will have a lot of fun following published instructions, and then each student will have to prepare their own instructions (of anything they want) and then teach it to the class.

The Great Unexpected – We are beginning our new class novel this week. Here is a description of The Great Unexpected:

From Newbery Medal winner and bestselling author Sharon Creech comes a grand, sweeping yarn that is a celebration of the great and unexpected gifts of love, friendship, and forgiveness. With a starred review from Kirkus Reviews calling it an “enchanting tale to treasure,” The Great Unexpected captures the heart and the imagination.

Humorous and heartfelt, this is a story of pairs—of young Naomi and Lizzie, both orphans in present-day Blackbird Tree, USA, and of Sybil and Nula, grown-up sisters from faraway Rook’s Orchard, Ireland, who have become estranged.

Young Naomi Deane is brimming with curiosity and her best friend, Lizzie Scatterding, could talk the ears off a cornfield. Naomi has a knack for being around when trouble happens. She knows all the peculiar people in town—like Crazy Cora and Witch Wiggins. But then, one day, a boy drops out of a tree. Just like that. A strangely charming Finn boy. And then the Dingle Dangle man appears, asking all kinds of questions. Curious surprises are revealed—three locked trunks, a pair of rooks, a crooked bridge, and that boy—and soon Naomi and Lizzie find their lives changed forever.

As two worlds are woven together, Creech reveals that hearts can be mended and that there is indeed a gossamer thread that connects us all.
