Merry Christmas!

Dear Christmas_2014Parents,

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all that you’ve done so far for our Grade 4 family. You have been a tremendous blessing.

From my family to yours, we’re all wishing you a safe, joyous and blessed Christmas season. See you in the New Year!

Blessings,

Mrs. Suckoo

Christmas Giving and Party

merry-christmas-clip-art-7

Dear Parents,

This year Grade 4 will be having our Christmas party on Thursday, December 18th. A few children have volunteered to bring a few treats and snacks on this day. Please check your child’s agenda for what they will be bringing.

Each child will also need to bring a mug/coffee cup for the party. We will be watching The Polar Express while sipping on some yummy, hot chocolate. If you would like to donate some hot chocolate or marshmallows, please see me.

Instead of doing a simple Secret Santa, we will be doing something a little different. There are many children who will be receiving nothing for Christmas this year, FBCS along with ARK will be collecting items to donate to families across the island. One thing we are really trying to instill in our students this holiday season is the importance of giving, even when you get nothing in return. A few items suggested by ARK are canned foods, toiletry items, boxed milk, household cleaners, diapers, wipes, childrens treats, food vouchers and so forth. No gift is too big or small. Please send whatever you are able to donate, as soon as possible, so that we can pass our bounty on to ARK to distribute before Christmas.

We’re also doing a Secret Santa during our class party, so I’m asking the students to each bring in a new, small, gift wrapped book for their Secret Santa. (Please ensure that books are new and unused.) Each student has secretly chosen a classmate to give to. I know things get tight this time of year so the limit for each book will be between $7 and $10 each.

Thank you so much for all your continued help and hard work. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Merry Christmas,

Mrs. Suckoo

Please, Mrs. Suckoo, don’t eat that turkey!

Here are a few samples of our turkey persuasive writing. Everyone had to persuade me not to eat a turkey for Thanksgiving. If you know me at all, you’ll know that I LOVE FOOD, especially a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, so Grade 4 had quite a challenge on their hands. I must also mention that they did a fantastic job, researching facts and finding turkey alternatives for me to eat. But, I must confess, that I did guiltily dine on some delicious turkey on Thanksgiving Day. 🙂 Hopefully you all also had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

Objectives and Homework for December 1 – 5, 2014

English: – Use facts to persuade.

The Tale of Despereaux:  We are continuing our new class novel and enjoying it immensely. We will continue to read at least 5 chapters per week, as well as complete various activities and writing assignments associated with the book. As usual, we will have spelling words every week from our reading, as well as weekly comprehension quizzes. Be sure to remind your child to read over the chapters that we’ve covered each week, to ensure that they remember the important points.

Some of the learning objectives (or WALT as we refer to them in Grade 4; We Are Learning To) that we will cover while reading are:

    • Describe the characters’ traits, feelings, and motivations in The Tale of Despereaux.
    • Refer to the text for evidence to support answers.
    • Form an opinion about a character’s trait based on the character’s actions, feelings and motivation.
    • Explain how the characters’ actions contribute to the sequence of events.
    • Engage in discussions sharing their ideas and listening to others.
    • Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words or phrases in The Tale of Despereaux.
    • Distinguish literal and non-literal language and determine its meaning.

Spelling: – There will be NO spelling test this week, as the kids seem a bit excited for the Christmas programme tomorrow night. 🙂

Math: – Interpret bar graphs to answer questions.

– Choose the best strategy to solve a problem.

– Use pictures to find the possible outcomes in a problem.

– Describe probability with words and numbers.

Science: – Describe how plants and animals have changed over time.

– Describe the causes of extinction.

– PLEASE NOTE: We will be having our Chapter 3 Science Test on Wednesday, December 10.

Social Studies: – From now until Christmas, Grade 4 will be looking at Christmases Around the World. We will be researching and discussing the Christmas traditions of countries all over the world. This week we will be covering Brazil, France and Germany. Remember to ask your child what they have learned so far about these beautiful countries!

Bible: – Study Bible verse for Friday. Parents, please encourage your child to study their Bible verse every week. These do impact their Bible grades.

– Examine God’s power as demonstrated in Scripture.

– Identify additional attributes to God’s evidence in Scripture.

God has rescued us from darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14
