Upcoming Tests

Dear Parents,Please note that grade 4 will be having their Chapter 8 Math Test on March 15. Please ensure that your child reviews this long division chapter as much as possible. Long division can get tricky, so help your child to memorize the Long Division Steps (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down and Do Over). An easy way that we’ve memorized it is Does McDonald’s Serve Burgers Downtown. Successfully conquering long division is also dependent on how well they know their multiplication tables, so continue to work with your child on knowing their times tables. We will also be having a Science Test on Chapter 9 on March 19. We’ve been covering the water cycle and weather. Review all of the weather and water cycle terms and definitions with your child. Go on to www.youtube.com with them and visit the links that I’ve previously posted on this blog to help your child actively learn. Thanks so much for your continued support.Sincerely,Ms. Suckoo

Learning All About Land/Sea Breeze and Rain Shadows

This week in science, we’ve learned all about Land & Sea Breeze as well as Rain Shadows. Ask your child the difference between land and sea breeze and also get them to describe what a rain shadow is.(A sea-breeze is a a wind from the sea that develops over land near coasts. As the hot air rises over the land, it moves over to the sea and cools. As it cools, it gets denser and falls and is then pushed or blown back over to the land as cooler air or breeze. This happens during the day.)(Land-breeze blows from the land toward the sea after sunset. The land cools more quickly than the ocean, cooling the air above it. The warmer air above the water continues to rise, and cooler air from over the land replaces it, creating a breeze.)(A rain-shadow is an area that has very little precipitation due to the effect of a land-form, especially a mountain range. The mountain range absorbs all of the moisture and precipitation, leaving only dry, hot air to flow to the other side.)During these lessons, we logged on to YouTube and watched a few videos that helped to show and describe how each of these worked. Please log on to review these videos with your child and get them to explain everything in their own words. Getting them to draw a picture that is associated with each is also a great way to help them to describe what is happening.

Success! We Have Fresh Water!

We got some amazing results with our ‘Water Cycle – Making Fresh Water’ experiment. Have a look at our pictures of before, during and after our experiment. Be sure to get your child to explain how and why this worked. We will also be having a science test on March 19, so now is a great time to start reviewing and quizzing your child on what we’ve been doing in science the past few weeks.

Long Division Can Be Fun!

Long Division Can Be Fun!

Long division is not bad at all…  Once you get the hang of it!  At first, though, it’s going to seem like a LOT of steps and stuff to keep track of…  But, each step is easy math.  You just need to get used to what to do at each step.

Sometimes, students find long division confusing.  This is because you’ll be doing division, multiplication and subtraction all in the same problem…  This is the first time you’ve had to do something with a bunch of different stuff like this.

But, believe me, if you take your time, you WILL be able to get this!!

One warning:  If you are not good at your times tables, this is NOT going to be fun for you at all.  The one thing that makes long division really hard is not knowing your times tables very well.
