As our first term comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to ourconference. The conferences will be held on December 6th – 7th and 10th – 11th for the purpose of increasing your understanding of the progress your child is making. Please see me or theAfter-School teacher in order to reserve a slot that best suites you.

Also, as we get close to conference time, I would like you to take a moment to fill out this sheet before our meeting. Use the back if you need more space. Key Words for Problem Solving Questions

Key Words for Solving Word Problems

The hardest part of solving a word problem is actually understanding the problem and determining the operation (or operations) that needs to be performed. Listed below are a few of the most commonly used key words in word problems and the operations that they signal. Keep in mind that same key words may signal more than one operation. It is then up to you to picture in your head what is going on and then determine which operation best fits that scenario.

 

 

ADDITION

We will be moving on to function tables in math soon. I know this can be a bit confusing to some students so as a means of early preperation, please review this with your child/children. Please let me know if you would like some extra practice.

A function table is a table of order pairs that followa rule.

A rule tells how one number is related to another.Rule: Subtract 2x-2=y6-2=49-2 =7 

So, the next two numbers are 10 and 13.

How can you find a rule and complete the table?

You can use number patterns to complete a table.

The number pattern is the rule for the table. You always look for the pattern from the                         INPUT to the OUTPUT.

Because of Winn-Dixie: – We started our class novel (Because of Winn-Dixie). Every week, we will be covering a few chapters, and after every 5 chapters, we will be having a quiz to ensure that every student comprehends what they are reading. Please ask your child/children questions about what we have read in class, and encourage him/her/them (as I do) to bring home their books to review what was read in class. My only rule is asking them not to read ahead of what we have covered in class unless they have been asked to do so.

This week, we are reading chapters 21 – 26.

Homework: Students should begin thinking about their book report. This will be due on December 3, 2012. That leaves a little over 3 weeks to prepare an outstanding book report. Please see handout that was sent home on Thursday, November 8.
