Because of Winn-Dixie – We have started our class novel – Because of Winn-Dixie this week in class. Each child will has been given their own copy to hold on to while we are studying this book. They are responsible for taking proper care of it, taking it home with them to re-read chapters and bring it to school every day. Every week, we will be covering a few chapters, and after every 5 chapters, we will be having a quiz to ensure that every student comprehends what they are reading. Please ask your child questions about what we have read in class, and encourage him/her (as I do) to bring home their books to review what was read in class. My only rule is asking them not to read ahead of what we have covered in class unless they have been asked to do so. At the end of this book, they will be required to complete a book report. Further information on this will be provided at a later date, when we are closer to completing it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week, we are reading chapters 8-10. Our Chapter 6-10 Quiz will be on Friday, September 24.

1 Vertebrate and 1 Invertebrate – Double Bubble

Grade 4 Science Research Project

1 Vertebrate and 1 Invertebrate

Find out details about a vertebrate and invertebrate of your choice:

  • Habitats
  • Diets
  • How it cares for its own
  • Size, weight & lifespan
  • Defenses against enemy
  • Unique behaviors
  • Other interesting facts

Create a ‘Double Bubble’ comparing and contrasting these very different animals.  Find out at least 3 things that are similar and 3 things that are different.  Please use as much science vocabulary as you can to describe your animals.  REMEMBER:  Use deeper level thinking.

Example:

Science_double_bubble

In addition to writing the names of the animals, you’ll also be drawing or using photos to add detail to your animal’s habitat as part of the ‘double bubble’ background.

When your scientific art piece is complete, you will need to type a 3-paragraph research paper on your findings.  Your paragraphs should include:

1st paragraph – What two animals did you select?
2nd paragraph – How are your animals the same and different?
3rd paragraph – What have you learned from this project?

This project is due Friday, October 18, 2013. Have fun, get creative and learn!

Sincerely,

Ms. Suckoo

Vertebrates and Invertebrates Creativity

Yesterday we enjoyed some creativity in science! We created our own vertebrates/invertebrates with the help of some clay and a crayon! Be sure to ask your child what the characteristics of  vertebrates and invertebrates are!

Backbone Video

Here is a short clip that we did today during science class. Have a listen as Craig explains the importance of having a backbone. 🙂

PS. I’m hoping this works. This is the first time that I’ve ever attempted to upload a video onto my blog! 🙂 *fingers and eyes crossed that it works*

Puzzle for Peace!

The Grade 4 class was chosen to decorate a puzzle piece for Stand Up Day (a day geared towards standing up to bullying). The puzzle piece is part of a plywood puzzle of Cayman Islands. Different schools get a piece to decorate as they wish. FBCS will select a representative(s) to bring this art piece on Peace Day, 21 September, to the Airport Park. This piece will then become part of a display for peace in the park. Isn’t that amazing?!

Look what we’ve done so far! Our idea was to paint brightly coloured hands and white doves flying! I think we’re getting there! 🙂

Because of Winn-Dixie

Today we starting our class novel – Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Before we started reading it though, we had some group discussions on some of the disabilities or illnesses that people may face. Because of Winn-Dixie addresses a few physical and mental challenges that some people face. I truly love this book and I know the class will as well. Remember to ask your child about what we have read and discussed in the classroom.

Here are a few photos of us collaborating with each other.

Grade 4 Loves to Read!

image_01

We All Love Reading!

Here we are, in front of our ‘Who Loves AR?’ poster. I created this as a way for me to track how everyone is doing, in terms of their Accelerated Reading tests and also as a way to encourage some healthy competition. The more books they read, the more points they get and the higher up on our point system they get to travel. Continue to encourage your child to read more books…especially books at their own level. How exciting is this?! 🙂

Mathletics Time!

We had a great time in the Computer lab this morning, working on some Mathletics tasks. Mathletics is an excellent tool that we use to reinforce concepts that we’ve covered in the class. Please allow your children to go on to mathletics.com at least once a week for additional math practice.
