Because of Winn-Dixie – We are continuing our class novel – Because of Winn-Dixie this week in class. Each child will has been given their own copy to hold on to while we are studying this book. They are responsible for taking proper care of it, taking it home with them to re-read chapters and bring it to school every day. Every week, we will be covering a few chapters, and after every 5 chapters, we will be having a quiz to ensure that every student comprehends what they are reading. Please ask your child questions about what we have read in class, and encourage him/her (as I do) to bring home their books to review what was read in class. My only rule is asking them not to read ahead of what we have covered in class unless they have been asked to do so. At the end of this book, they will be required to complete a book report. Further information on this will be provided at a later date, when we are closer to completing it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Fruity Friday

fruit_face

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow is Fruity Friday!

As a reminder, on Fridays that we have no holidays or a school break, grades K – 6 will rotate donating and participating in our ‘Fruity Friday Healthy Snack Sale’.  Last week the Grade 3 class hosted the sale, and tomorrow—11th October—is Grade 4’s turn!  You should have received a note in your child’s backpack, which would’ve included recommended snacks.

Each item is sold at $0.50 and the funds raised are then put back into the classrooms for needed resources.

If you could kindly drop off your child’s ‘Healthy Snack’ in the school office in the morning or prior to 2:30pm tomorrow it would be greatly appreciated.  Reminder: PLEASE NO ITEMS CONTAINING NUTS.

**If you have 20 – 25 minutes and are able to assist with the Healthy Snack sales from 2:25pm – 2:50pm, please let me or the office know.

Thanks so much for your support!

Mode, Median and Outlier

We had some fun learning about the Mode, Median and Outlier yesterday and today! Just to refresh your memory (smile), here are the definitions. For today’s homework, everyone will be creating a poster to help them to remember each term, so just ask your child to tell you about his/her poster tonight. We also went beyond and learned a few new terms as well, which will come in handy when our Terra Nova tests come around next year.

FIRST STEP IS TO ALWAYS PUT YOUR NUMBERS IN ORDER FROM LEAST TO GREATEST.

Mean: is the average. I described it to them that the mean, is the MEAN thing to do, because it involves gathering (adding) everyone up and then splitting (dividing) them up. I used the example that what if I gathered up all of their family members and then split them up in each continent…that would be pretty MEAN thing for me to do, right?

Median: is the middle number. I taught them to use their fingers (one on the first number, and the other on the last number), then bunny hop until their fingers meet in the middle. If they end up with two numbers, they need to add both numbers and then divide by 2 to get the median.

Mode: is the most popular number (the number that appears the most).

Outlier: the number that is outside of the box. This poor number is the outcast…he is either too big or too small to fully be apart of the group.

Range: The difference between the largest and smallest number. To find this out, you would subtract your smallest number, from the largest number.

Here is the link for the website that we used today. I’m also attaching another fun link to try!
