Because of Winn-Dixie – We will be starting our class novel – Because of Winn-Dixie this week in class. Each child will be given their own copy to hold on to while we are studying this book. They will be responsible for taking proper care of it, taking it home with them to re-read chapters and bringing it to school every day. Every week, we will be covering a few chapters, and after every 5 chapters, we will be having a quiz to ensure that every student comprehends what they are reading. Please ask your child questions about what we have read in class, and encourage him/her (as I do) to bring home their books to review what was read in class. My only rule is asking them not to read ahead of what we have covered in class unless they have been asked to do so. At the end of this book, they will be required to complete a book report. Further information on this will be provided at a later date, when we are closer to completing it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week, we are reading chapters 1-5. Our Chapter 1-5 Quiz will be on Tuesday, September 24.

We enjoyed another fun science experiment this week! We’ve been studying Vascular Plants, so this helped us to actually SEE and OBSERVE how they work! Be sure to ask you child what they learned during our experiment!

A big thank you to the parents who provided our supplies. You’re support is always appreciated.

Silent Reading Rocks!

I am obsessed with reading! 🙂 So, I just wanted to put this warning out to you…I want your child to become obsessed with reading as well. 🙂 To do this, I really value our Silent Reading time. It’s so exciting to know that we can travel all over the world, and be whoever we want to be, just by opening the pages of a book. How amazing is that?! “Yes, yes I love books!” 🙂

We will also be having Library time every Monday, between 2-2:30, so please ask your child which books he or she has borrowed, and maybe a few questions about what it is about and if they are enjoying it. 🙂 Please also ensure that you child has read and will return his/her book by the following Monday. Everyone will also have many opportunities to gain Accelerated Reading (AR) points every week. The more points that they earn, the more prizes they will receive when our AR Shop opens later on this term.

HAPPY READING!!!

Cells, cells and more cells!

Today in Science class, we made  jello, plant cells! It was a very ‘sweet’ lesson. 🙂

Be sure to ask your kids a little about plant and animal cells. We will be continuing this focus during our next science class as well.

Oh, the Places We’ll Go!

We had a fantastic first day yesterday! We all got to know each other and did some really cool crafts. One of my highlights was learning what each student wanted to become when they grew up! We read the book “Oh, the Places We’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss and created Hot Air Balloon with our pictures in them. 🙂 Here’s a peek:
