Dress Down Day for Bahamas

Over the weekend and well into Monday, many of us watched in horror as Hurricane Dorian took aim on parts of the Bahamas. With the category 5 hurricane remaining over areas for approximately 2 days, the destruction that was wrought was utterly heart wrenching to watch and listen to.

For many of us, this brought back horrible memories of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. We can still remember the needs that were experienced in the aftermath of such a storm. It was here that Samaritan’s Purse were able to step in and offer much needed disaster relief assistance. They were the first volunteers on the ground in Grand Cayman.

Now, we are requesting your help to aid our neighbors in the Bahamas.

First Baptist Christian School will be holding a special Dress Down Down on Friday, September 13th, where all donations will be given to Samaritan’s Purse (Samaritan’s Purse will be receiving donations via First Baptist Church) for urgent hurricane relief in the Bahamas. Additional donations can also be dropped off to the FBCS School Office during regular school hours.

We thank you for your willingness to help us serve others in Christ. We also implore you to continue to pray for those affected by this historic and deadly storm.

Numeracy and Science: Homework and Objectives (09/09 – 09/13)

Hi Grade 4 Parents and Guardians!

I am Jared Bremner (Mr.B) and I will be your child’s Numeracy and Science teacher this year. This is my second year at FBCS and I look forward to working with your family this year. My goal is to ensure that learning is fun and challenging while guiding your child to become more independent. All I expect from your child is for them to give their best at all times.

My Background:

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa. I attended a prestigious Boys’ High School in Cape Town and after school I took a gap year doing community work around my country. A year later, I was employed by my local church to be a Children’s Pastor for children aged 1 to 13 years old. After 3 years, I decided to study to be a teacher and continued to be a part-time Children’s Pastor. My first teaching post was at my childhood elementary school. My wife and I decided to move to the Cayman Islands last year so that we could travel the world and meet new people.

If you would like to know more about me as a teacher:

(This was created for a project in our last year of university.)

Communication:

We are a team and communication is very important for us to be successful together! If you ever need to contact me, please don’t hesitate.

NUMERACY

It is essential that your child practices their times tables everyday! Last year they had to focus on 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10. This year, they will need to demonstrate fluency through 12 x 12.   1. Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number;
  2. Compare and order whole numbers expressed through millions; and
  3. Round whole numbers expressed through millions to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand.

SCIENCE

Reading

In honor of Roald Dahl’s birthday this Friday, we’ve been reading mini class novel – The Twits.

Synopsis from amazon.

Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the smelliest, nastiest, ugliest people in the world. They hate everything—except playing mean jokes on each other, catching innocent birds to put in their Bird Pies, and making their caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, stand on their heads all day. But the Muggle-Wumps have had enough. They don’t just want out, they want revenge.

Be sure to follow along with your child as we read through this delightfully hilarious (and sometimes face scrunching) book. We’ll be doing a lot of in-class activities as we read different chapters each day.

Writing

We are continuing to get back into the groove of writing and learning to love it. A few of our focuses this week are:

  • Push our writing to a new level.
  • Push ourselves to try using new words in our writing.

7-Up and M&M’s

M&M’s and 7-Up might sound like a strange concept to begin with, but I promise you, we learned a lot and had quite a few laughs.

The main focus of this activity was not only to help me learn a bit more about each student, but also to remind everyone that more is expected of them in Grade 4. We learned that in the fourth grade, everyone should be writing sentences with 7 or more detailed words.

Be sure to ask your child how M&M’s fit into this activity.
