Numeracy and Science: Objectives (09/23 – 09/27)

Numeracy

Learning objectives:

  1. Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number;
  2. Compare and order whole numbers expressed through millions; and
  3. Round whole numbers expressed through millions to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand.

Focus in class:

  • Comparing numbers according to their place value
  • Ordering numbers: least to greatest(ascending order), greatest to least (descending order)

SCIENCE

Learning Objectives:

  1. The survival of plants and animals depends on photosynthesis;
  2. Plants and animals have different structures and processes for obtaining energy; and
  3. Plants and animals have different structures and processes for creating offspring.

Focus in class:

Plant reproduction and pollination (More detail in the video than they will be required to know)

Please note:

  1. Some assessments will form part of a classwork mark – I will often inform the students verbally and the quiz / test will be on a small part of the unit that we’re busy with. This gives them feedback of their performance before a big test and helps me address any issues.
  2. I tick correct work and put a dot next to incorrect work as I believe students should always be able to review their work and hopefully improve their answers.
  3. I will allow students to retake a test that they did not do well in or if they would like to improve their result. I try to mark their tests in class and give them feedback in order for them to review their work and eliminate errors.

Science: Flower Dissection

Yesterday in groups, the students got the opportunity to dissect a lily and learnt about the various parts of the flower. We first spent time appreciating the beauty of the flower!

After dissecting the flower, they got to look at the leaf under the microscope and observed the plant cells.

In the next lesson (Thursday), they will label and draw the parts of the flower.

Numeracy and Science: Homework and Objectives (09/09 – 09/13)

Hi Grade 4 Parents and Guardians!

I am Jared Bremner (Mr.B) and I will be your child’s Numeracy and Science teacher this year. This is my second year at FBCS and I look forward to working with your family this year. My goal is to ensure that learning is fun and challenging while guiding your child to become more independent. All I expect from your child is for them to give their best at all times.

My Background:

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa. I attended a prestigious Boys’ High School in Cape Town and after school I took a gap year doing community work around my country. A year later, I was employed by my local church to be a Children’s Pastor for children aged 1 to 13 years old. After 3 years, I decided to study to be a teacher and continued to be a part-time Children’s Pastor. My first teaching post was at my childhood elementary school. My wife and I decided to move to the Cayman Islands last year so that we could travel the world and meet new people.

If you would like to know more about me as a teacher:

(This was created for a project in our last year of university.)

Communication:

We are a team and communication is very important for us to be successful together! If you ever need to contact me, please don’t hesitate.

NUMERACY

It is essential that your child practices their times tables everyday! Last year they had to focus on 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10. This year, they will need to demonstrate fluency through 12 x 12. If I don’t give specialized homework for Numeracy, ensure that you spend time drilling times tables with your child.

Learning Objectives for the next 2 weeks:

  1. Read, write, and identify the place and value of each digit in a nine-digit whole number;
  2. Compare and order whole numbers expressed through millions; and
  3. Round whole numbers expressed through millions to the nearest thousand, ten thousand, and hundred thousand.

SCIENCE

Revision of the Scientific method.

Learning Objectives for the next 2 weeks:

  1. The survival of plants and animals depends on photosynthesis;
  2. Plants and animals have different structures and processes for obtaining energy; and
  3. Plants and animals have different structures and processes for creating offspring.
