Because of Winn-Dixie – We are continuing our class novel – Because of Winn-Dixie this week in class. Each child will has been given their own copy to hold on to while we are studying this book. They are responsible for taking proper care of it, taking it home with them to re-read chapters and bring it to school every day. Every week, we will be covering a few chapters, and after every 5 chapters, we will be having a quiz to ensure that every student comprehends what they are reading. Please ask your child questions about what we have read in class, and encourage him/her (as I do) to bring home their books to review what was read in class. My only rule is asking them not to read ahead of what we have covered in class unless they have been asked to do so. At the end of this book, they will be required to complete a book report. Further information on this will be provided at a later date, when we are closer to completing it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week, we are reading chapters 11-15. Our Chapter 11-15 Quiz will be on Friday, October 11.

1 Vertebrate and 1 Invertebrate – Double Bubble

Grade 4 Science Research Project

1 Vertebrate and 1 Invertebrate

Find out details about a vertebrate and invertebrate of your choice:

  • Habitats
  • Diets
  • How it cares for its own
  • Size, weight & lifespan
  • Defenses against enemy
  • Unique behaviors
  • Other interesting facts

Create a ‘Double Bubble’ comparing and contrasting these very different animals.  Find out at least 3 things that are similar and 3 things that are different.  Please use as much science vocabulary as you can to describe your animals.  REMEMBER:  Use deeper level thinking.

Example:

Science_double_bubble

In addition to writing the names of the animals, you’ll also be drawing or using photos to add detail to your animal’s habitat as part of the ‘double bubble’ background.

When your scientific art piece is complete, you will need to type a 3-paragraph research paper on your findings.  Your paragraphs should include:

1st paragraph – What two animals did you select?
2nd paragraph – How are your animals the same and different?
3rd paragraph – What have you learned from this project?

This project is due Friday, October 18, 2013. Have fun, get creative and learn!

Sincerely,

Ms. Suckoo

Paper Bag Reading Project

Grade 4 – Independent Reading Project

Brown Paper Bag Reading Assignment

During our last quarter, you will read the book assigned to you as part of our Independent Reading Project.

You will be completing a paper bag book report as an assessment for this novel/story.

On the Outside….

For this book report, you must consider each the following: setting, plot, main character, and theme.

There are four panels on a paper bag. You will be expected to use one panel of your brown paper bag for each of these four elements. The information for each panel must be neatly written or typed on a small piece of paper and glued or taped to the bag. You won’t need any more than a paragraph or so for each panel.

Front : BOOK TITLE and AUTHOR

  • Drawing/Illustration/Photo

Side 1: CHARACTERS

  • Who are the main characters in the story? Give a written description for each character.
  • Lists of Character traits, including physical traits (what did they look like?)

Back: SUMMARY

  • Write a summary of the main events in the story.
  • You must summarize the story in a few sentences – keep it short and sweet. Many times, this is more difficult than writing a lengthy description.
  • Include only the important parts.
  • How did you enjoy the book? Why or why not? Would you recommend it? How many stars would you give it?
  • Remember to add your name here.

Side 2: SETTING

  • Where does the story take place? What is the importance of the setting?
  • Illustration/drawing/photograph of setting

On the Inside…

You must include 5 items in your bag that have some significance to the story. Be imaginative…Think outside of the box. You can use toys, modeling clay, or anything else that may represent something important from the story. Make sure each item that you pick is unique and include a few sentences explaining why you choose this item and how it relates to the book.

You will be expected to share your book report with the class (inside and out) and will be marked on: inclusion of the setting, plot, major character, theme and conventions (for the outside of the bag), your five items inside the bag and your overall speaking/listening skills during the presentation. This will give you a total mark out of 25 for this book report.

Have fun and do your best!
