Chapter 9 Math Test

Chapter 9 was a very quick and fun chapter in math. We are just about finished with it and we will be having a chapter test on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Please help your child to review and different angles/triangles, polygons and quadriliaterals. Be sure to ask them about their triangle brochures that we made in class to help them to study.

Face. Edge. Vertex!

Just for fun, the title for this post should be said like: Lights. Camera. Action! 😉As we move on from division, we’re now focusing on geometry! This week we learnt all about the vertex (the points or corners), the edge (the straight lines) and the face (the flat part) of 3-dimensional shapes. Have a peek at what assignments we’ve been working on in class. A fun way to review the different 3D shapes that we’ve covered is to just point out random objects at home (the cereal box, ice cream cones, vegetable tins etc) and get your child to identify and describe them (how many faces, edges and vertices do they have?). Have fun learning!

SOCIAL STUDIES POSTER PROJECT

Pretend that I am a tourist who has never visited the Cayman Islands before. I am really interested in learning about the early seafaring days and why Caymanian’s are so respected for their seafaring skills. Collect pictures and information about seafaring and boat building in the Cayman Islands. Create a poster about what you have discovered.

You will be graded on your creativity and content. You will not be required to present your poster to the class. This project is due on April 3rd, 2012. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Grade 4 Poetry

We’ve been having a blast this week listening to, reading and writing poetry. Here are some of the phenomincal poems that I’ve collected so far from a few students. I’m sure there will be lots more to post later as well so stay tuned!

DON’T!

By Johnathon Bedasse

I’m tired of people telling me don’t,

And will I listen to them? I won’t!

They tell me don’t do this and don’t do that,

Now I feel like hitting them with a bat!

You’re gonna be in trouble and detention too,

Now how would you like it if I said that to you!

Stand Up to a Bully!

By Jonathan Chin

Stand up to a bully,

Live your life fully.

Bullies just THINK they are cool,

But they are the real fools.

I’m all alone with no one to tell,

My mum is always busy,

And my dad is never there.

My brother is always on the computer,

And I’m always scared.

People call me stupid,

People call me names,

People are always mean to me,

But it’s me that gets the blame!

————————————————

Bully, Bully, Bully

By Alex F.

I see a bully sitting in a tree.

I see a bully punchin’ somebody.

I see a bully,

I see a bully,

I see a bully looking at me.

I see a bully coming to me.

I see a bully trying to punch me.

I see a bully,

I see a bully,

I see a bully that just missed me.

I see a bully coming down from a tree.

I see a bully trying to kick somebody.

I see a bully,

I see a bully,

I see a bully getting beat, kicked and punched by his mommy.

————————————————

Jibber-Jabber

By Johnathon Bedasse

“Jibber-jabber, giggle-gaggle”

People sure love to babble.

Mama-lulu, fabber-labber”

Stop all the jabber!

THE NAZI SOLDIERS

By Jonathan Chin

Oh, those Nazi soldiers, they are so mean,

I don’t even want them to be seen.

They kept taking Jews to concentration camps,

Perhaps they led them up torture ramps.

They beat them, they pushed them down,

Just like they pierced Jesus with a horrible crown.

But I know the Jews remembered our Lord Jesus Christ,

His cross He had to bear,

So they kept faith, love and prayer.

 The School Food is Really

GROSS!

By: Kaylee Scott

The food at school is gross; I hate the Sloppy Joe the most

It really makes me sick; the corn dogs are like rats on a stick

The noodles are like worms and the trays have lots of germs

I really hate the food from school, so next time I’ll bring home food and won’t be a fool!

SMASHED CHICKEN

by: James Powell

I saw a smashed chicken on the road at school.

It looked like a rat.

Because it went splat.

It had a tail.

That could catch some hail.

It had big feet.

I bet you it’s full of meat.

Science Homework – All About Hurricanes

GRADE 4

SCIENCE HOMEWORK

Please submit your work typed or on lined paper, neatly written.

This is due on Monday, March 26, 2012.

With the help of pages 400-401 in your Science textbook, answer the following questions:

1.     Why is it important that forecasters accurately predict the path of a hurricane?

2.     How do you think hurricanes can cause flooding on land?

3.     The Hurricane Hunters have greatly helped scientists better understand hurricanes. Write two paragraphs explaining what the Hurricane Hunters do and how their work has helped scientists better understand hurricanes. Why is this important for us living in the Cayman Islands?

CREATIVE JOURNAL WRITING

You have just been through a category 3 hurricane. Write a blog/journal entry describing the aftermath. How are you feeling? How does the island look? What do you smell and hear? Please include a drawing or pictures. (Remember to let me know where you got your pictures from if they are not your own.)

‘Number the Stars’ Cereal Box Book Report

Cereal BoxBook Report

As we read the last few chapters of Number the Stars, students need to begin to think about their book report. This quarter, students will need to create a cereal box book report at home. Students will decorate a real cereal box with illustrations and information related to ‘Number the Stars’ using the directions below.

FRONT OF THE BOX: Use a piece of white or light colored paper to cover the front of your cereal box. (You will probably want to create the cover before gluing it on your box.) Invent a name for the cereal that is related to the title of the book and sounds like a cereal. Do not use the exact title of the book. You may want to look at some real cereal boxes to get some ideas. Choose a shape for the cereal as well as colors and ingredients that all relate to the book. For example, for the book Because of Winn-Dixie, you might invent a cereal called Winn-Dixie Crunch, a toasted oat cereal in the shape of miniature dogs.

RIGHT SIDE OF BOX: Make a list of ingredients that includes the story elements Characters and Setting. Under the heading “Ingredients,” list the main characters and write a sentence about each one. Then describe the setting. You can use the template on the attached sheet or cover the side with white or light colored paper and do it in your own way. Just make sure you include the main character and the setting.

LEFT SIDE OF BOX: Write a summary that describes the main problem and the solution of the book. Try words that will “grab” readers’ attention and make them want to buy your cereal. You can use the attached template or do this your own way.

BACK OF BOX: Design a game that is based on the story. It can be a puzzle, a word search, a word scramble, a maze, a crossword puzzle, a hidden picture illustration, or any other fun activity that might be found on the back of a cereal box. Make sure it includes information from the book.

TOP OF BOX: Include the title, author, number of pages, and number of stars you would give this book if you were a book critic. The maximum number of stars you would be 5. You can use the template or create the top of the box yourself as long as you include all of the things listed above.

PRIZE: Cereal boxes often include a prize. Your prize must be something the main character could have used in the book or something that reminds you of the main character. You can even include a picture of the prize on the front of your box to let the reader know what is inside the box.

ORAL PRESENTATION: This is due on March 30th and you will also be doing oral presentations on this day. Your presentation will be a 30-60 second ‘television commercial’. Practice your commercial to make sure of the wording and the timing. Do not just encourage the audience by using opinion words (exciting, great, interesting, best, good, etc.), but also by featuring elements of the book- scenes, facts, etc. Be dynamic and try to convince the audience (your classmates) to buy the cereal whether you liked the book or not. Optional: Be a character from the book when you present your commercial.

* If students need any white paper, colored paper, or construction paper from school, they are more than welcome to ask me for some. (Thank you to Beth Newingham of the Troy School District for sharing this great project!)

Here are some nice examples:

Upcoming Tests

Dear Parents,Please note that grade 4 will be having their Chapter 8 Math Test on March 15. Please ensure that your child reviews this long division chapter as much as possible. Long division can get tricky, so help your child to memorize the Long Division Steps (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down and Do Over). An easy way that we’ve memorized it is Does McDonald’s Serve Burgers Downtown. Successfully conquering long division is also dependent on how well they know their multiplication tables, so continue to work with your child on knowing their times tables. We will also be having a Science Test on Chapter 9 on March 19. We’ve been covering the water cycle and weather. Review all of the weather and water cycle terms and definitions with your child. Go on to www.youtube.com with them and visit the links that I’ve previously posted on this blog to help your child actively learn. Thanks so much for your continued support.Sincerely,Ms. Suckoo
