Objectives and Homework for February 17 – 21, 2014

READING WEEK!!!

This week is Reading Week! YIPPEE! In class, we will spending extra time reading. Please also ensure that your child is reading for homework as well. πŸ™‚ You will notice that I am assigning less homework this week, to accommodate the extra reading time at home. You could even make this a family affair! Maybe allocate about 20 minutes of silent reading before bedtime for the whole family. If you’re anything like me, you’ll cherish this quiet, family time. Throw in a warm cup of tea and viola…you’re in heaven! πŸ˜‰ Have fun and keep encouraging your child to read.

We’re starting off today with a bang! Each class will be passing along a reading baton. Each student will also begin to list any book that they’re reading, during the week, so that as a school, we can actually see how many books we’ve read! Exciting, huh?!

Tuesday we will be having buddy reading with Grade 2.

Wednesday, we will be welcoming Caymanian author; Mrs. Lorraine, to share a bit of information as to what it’s like to be an author.

Thursday, Pastor Paul will be meeting with us to discuss a bit of what his writing process is and to answer any questions we may have.

Friday, is Character Dress Down Day! This is always such a blast! Be sure to start planning a costume with your child. Be sure that they have the book that their character is from with them. During lunch time, we will also be having ‘Bananas About Reading’ where we will all indulge in banana split as we wrap up Reading Week.

As you can see, we have a lot of exciting activities planned! If you have any spare time and would like to, we’d be honored for you to visit us and read one of your favorite children’s books as well. Just let me know.

Thanks always for keeping the love of reading alive! πŸ™‚

Kayaking Through the Mangroves

Wow! What an amazing time we had on Friday! How many people get to wake up and go on a kayaking trip through the majestic mangroves during a school day! πŸ˜€ It was such a treat to wade quietly through the unique mangrove tunnels, listening to the water lapping against our brightly-coloured kayaks and birds sounding their welcome. As the golden sun warmed us, we learned about mangrove seeds, how very important it is to protect our mangroves and even got to touch the top of a jelly fish!

Be sure to ask your child what they learned and get them to describe (using as many adjectives as possible) our field trip. Thanks so much for entrusting your child’s safety with us! A big thanks to Cayman Kayaks as well, for doing the tour with us.

Have a wonderful week! Remember to spare a few minutes to just go outside and enjoy the many sights and sounds that God has blessed us with! πŸ™‚

Help with Estimating Quotients

I found an extremely helpful YouTube video that will help anyone who is struggling with estimating quotients. We watched this today, made notes and were very excited to find it! YAY!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW5jEeEQ64g

Here is some additional help!

Compatible numbers are numbers you can divide easily. You can use compatible numbers to estimate quotients.

Think of a division fact that is like the numbers you are dividing.

Estimate: 181 5.

Think: 20Β  5 = 4
200 5 = 40

So,Β Β

181 5 is about 40.

Find where the quotient begins.

Estimate:

312

5
Try dividing hundreds.

5 < 3 Not enough hundreds
Try dividing tens.
5 > 31 Enough tens

So the quotient begins in the tens place.
Find the first digit of the quotient.
Think: About how many 5s in 31?
5 x 5 = 25
too small
5 x 6 = 30
31 is between 25 and 35. Try 6.
5 x 7 = 35
too big
Since you are estimating, write zeros for the other digits.

is about 60.

If two numbers are compatible, one divides the other evenly.

Kayak Trip – Rescheduled

Dear Parents,

Our field trip has been reschedule for this Friday, February 7th. We will leave school at 9am to go to Safe Haven. Please email me if you would like to come on the trip and be in a kayak, or if you are able to drive. We need 2 or 3 parents to drive.

Students are to come to school in their swimwear, shorts and a t-shirt that they can get wet. They should also bring a towel and their P.E kit (along with their socks and sneakers) to change in to after the trip.

Thanks so much for your help.

Sincerely,

Ms. Cilliers and

Mrs. Suckoo
