Reading Week – Day 3

Woohoo…we made it to the middle of Reading Week!

Today was another wonderful day! We started our morning off with Chapel, where every teacher was able to share their favorite Bible verse and explain a little as to why it was their favorite.

During our school day, Grade 4 then made prayer booklets (they will bring these home on Friday). Until then, I’ll give you a quick peek! 🙂

Tomorrow is a free Dress Down Day. We will be reading The Sugar Creek Gang series and Elke Feuer (a local author as well as Erik’s mum) will pay us a visit!

Reading Week – Day 2

The focus of Day 2 for Reading Week was Far Flutterby, by Karen Kingsbury. We started the day off by watching and listening to it being read to us in Chapel. This lovely book is about the struggles that a little, ordinary caterpillar faces before being transformed into a beautiful butterfly. We discussed the significance that this plays in our life, in that the struggles that we go through, should help to strengthen not only our faith, but our dependence on God.

The struggle, is what gives you wings!” Far Flutterby

Then, we focused an art lesson on colorful butterflies, along with the verse:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

2 Corinthians 12:9

We also took our thoughts about Random Acts of Kindness (ARK) and turned them into an action. 🙂 Ask your child/children to explain how we did this. 🙂 (A special thank you to Elijah for providing the ‘treats’.)

We ended the day with a bit of silent reading (please remind your child/children to continue to update their reading log with the number of pages that he/she has read daily).

We also got a head start on tomorrow’s Reading Week focus, and wrote down our favorite Bible verse. Please help your child/children to attach it (tape or pin) it to their P.E. uniform tomorrow.

Reading Week – Day 1

You Are Special

This morning, during Chapel, we listened to and watched You Are Special, by Mac Lucado. It’s a beautiful story reminding us that God made us all special and that we are all loved by Him. I’m attaching the link for you to watch:

In the classroom, we took this concept a little further and created hand prints with our names written on them. Everyone then had a chance to write one, kind thought on each other’s hand.

We also discussed and watched a few videos that spoke about Acts of Random Kindness (ARK). Grade 4 would love to do a few ARK’s this week. Please speak with your child/children this week and maybe come up with something that he/she can do. 🙂

Following this, we had a nice discussion on what Give Me Your Eyes by Brandon Heath is about, and how it is so important to not only speak about doing good, but also put those thoughts into action. This made Matthew West’s song, Do Something, a perfect follow-up song. 🙂

Then, we ended the day with a Library session, so that everyone has something to read throughout the week. 🙂

It was a wonderful day! I’m looking forward to Day 2 of Reading Week. Please remember to send your child to school wearing  brightly colored shirts, along with their school bottoms.

Thank you!

Number the Stars:  We’ve finished Number the Stars. It. Was. Amazing! Ask you kids all about it! For the next couple of weeks, we will now focus on creating an in-class book report. Students will be placed into groups and will be given a few tasks to work on. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Some of the learning objectives (or WALT as we refer to them in Grade 4; We Are Learning To) that we will cover while reading are:

    • Describe the characters’ traits, feelings, and motivations in Number the Stars.
    • Refer to the text for evidence to support answers.
    • Form an opinion about a character’s trait based on the character’s actions, feelings and motivation.
    • Explain how the characters’ actions contribute to the sequence of events.
    • Engage in discussions sharing their ideas and listening to others.
    • Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words or phrases in Number the Stars.
    • Distinguish literal and non-literal language and determine its meaning.
    • Gain information about the past.
    • Build upon their background knowledge of World War II.

Math: – Solve a problem by acting it out.

– Explore multiplying by 2-digit numbers.
