SCIENCE

OBJECTIVES

ACTIVITIES

RESOURCES

To introduce students to the motions of Earth, the moon, and the Sun. MOTIONS OF EARTH, THE MOON, AND THE SUN.

  • We’re always on the move! Even when you’re standing still, you’re moving! You are moving because the Earth and everything in our solar system is constantly moving.
  • At the center of it all is the Sun. It takes the Sun 25 days to spin, or rotate, completely around.
  • The Earth, which is the third planet from the Sun, takes 24 hours to rotate. This is what causes day and night. As the Earth rotates, it also moves, or revolves, around the Sun.
  • The Earth’s path around the Sun is called its orbit. It takes the Earth one year, or 365 1/4 days, to completely orbit the Sun.
  • As the Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth. The Moon’s orbit lasts 27 1/2 days, but because the Earth keeps moving, it takes the Moon two extra days, 29 1/2, to come back to the same place in our sky.

  • There are 8 planets.
  • 7 of them are named after Roman gods.
  • All planets have different characteristics.

ACTIVITY 1:

  • Check all your visible activities: Make sure they are complete and do corrections.

ACTIVITY 2:

Assessment Tomorrow – Name and order of planets, last four planets. Learn the following facts:

  • Jupiter is fifth from the sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system (eleven times larger than Earth) and is considered a gas giant. Jupiter has no solid surface. Its colored cloud patterns are caused by enormous storms in its atmosphere.
  • Saturn is sixth from the sun. Early scientists thought Saturn was the only planet with rings, but we now know that all four gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) have rings. Saturn’s atmosphere is similar to Jupiter’s atmosphere.  Saturn is almost ten times the size of Earth.
  • Uranus is seventh from the sun. Uranus is a gas giant and is unique in that it spins on its side. It has a large atmosphere and is a cold planet that is four times the size of Earth.
  • Neptune is eighth from the sun and also a very cold planet. Neptune appears blue because of its atmosphere.  It is roughly four times the size of Earth.

Martin Luther King Jr. Portrait

LIVE LESSON: 9:00 AM

Log in: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/9474105316

PLEASE HAVE ALL OF YOUR RESOURCES READY SO THAT WE CAN DO OUR ARTWORK TOGETHER

Few figures in American history inspire hope in the human spirit quite like civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr. His iconic I Have a Dream speech outlined his hopes for the future of the country where equality, community and peach reign supreme. In January, we celebrate Reverend Kings birth and legacy but, today, we will do an art focus on him as we think on a more global scale as we create a portrait of Marin Luther King Jr., surrounded by your own dreams for society.

WRITING

OBJECTIVES

ACTIVITIES

RESOURCES

Students will:

– Effectively use language to show, not tell and dialogue to draft the events in your descriptive narrative

Writing the Body

ACTIVITY 1:

  • Students, today we will continue drafting our stories, with our story plans beside us. As we write, were going to bring our story to life by including dialogue to show (not tell) a characters feelings.
  • Lesson Link: https://youtu.be/mhm3tK41uWQ

ACTIVITY 2:

  • Now you are going to draft the body (events) of your descriptive narrative
  • Open your composition book to the next clean page.
  • Follow our usual layout!
  • Heading: Descriptive Narrative                 Date: June 5, 2020
  • Rule off after your heading
  • Objective: Effectively use language to show, not tell and dialogue to draft the events in your descriptive narrative

ACTIVITY 3:

  • As you draft your stories, look back at your planning organizer to remind yourself of what happens in the middle of your story.
  • Remember to write your events in the order that they happen.
  • One way to make it more interesting and believable is to include dialogue between characters.
  • This is a great technique authors use to show a characters feelings or what a character is thinking, without being obvious or boring about it.
  • For example, instead of the character saying, Molly couldnt wait to get out of the house” (which is fine writing, but a little boring), I could write: Quick! Lets go!” Molly shouted as she grabbed her friends hand and pulled her towards the door.
  • When we use dialogue, we want it to move the story forward so the reader stays interested and wondering what will happen next.
  • The body of your descriptive narrative must be completed by today. This can be between 2-4 paragraphs. Don’t worry, we will go back and edit to add even more detail next week.
