OBJECTIVES

ACTIVITIES

RESOURCES

To be able to write decimals in a variety of forms. (Standard, written and expanded form) STANDARD, WRITTEN AND EXPANDED FORM

  • The standard form of a decimal number shows the decimal number written in figures. As an example, two tenth is written as 0.2 in standard form.
  • When writing decimals that have a zero in the ones place, like 0.2 or 0.017, don’t write “point,” “and” or anything else. Just start writing the number. For example, write 0.9 as nine tenths, whereas 1.9 is one and nine tenths.
  • When you write a number in expanded form (also known as expanded notation), you are expressing the number separated into its composite individual place values (and decimal values if necessary) in the form of an expression.
  • Example: Write 317.29 in expanded form.
  • 317.29 = 300 + 10 + 7 + 0.2 + 0.09

ACTIVITY 2:

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.
