To introduce students to the motions of Earth, the moon, and the Sun. MOTIONS OF EARTH, THE MOON, AND THE SUN.

  • We’re always on the move! Even when you’re standing still, you’re moving! You are moving because the Earth and everything in our solar system is constantly moving.
  • As the Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon orbits the Earth. The Moon’s orbit lasts 27 1/2 days, but because the Earth keeps moving, it takes the Moon two extra days, 29 1/2, to come back to the same place in our sky.
  • As the New moon begins its orbit and we see more and more of the moon, this is called Waxing. After the moon gets to its Full phase, we start to see less and less of the moon. This is called Waning.

  • 2. DIALOGUE – Add a bit of dialogue to make your writing more interesting and give it some texture.
  • 3. SHOW NOT TELL – You will include vivid, sensory details (how things look, smell, sound, feel, and taste). Use this to bring your setting and story to life! For an example of this, simply look back over some of our readings of The One and Only Ivan.
  • 4. SIMILES AND METAPHORS – Add these to make your writing even more interesting.

  • 7 of them are named after Roman gods.
  • All planets have different characteristics.

ACTIVITY 1:

Assessment Tomorrow – Name and order of planets, last four planets. Learn the following facts:

  • Jupiter is fifth from the sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system (eleven times larger than Earth) and is considered a gas giant. Jupiter has no solid surface. Its colored cloud patterns are caused by enormous storms in its atmosphere.
  • Saturn is sixth from the sun. Early scientists thought Saturn was the only planet with rings, but we now know that all four gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) have rings. Saturn’s atmosphere is similar to Jupiter’s atmosphere.  Saturn is almost ten times the size of Earth.
  • Uranus is seventh from the sun. Uranus is a gas giant and is unique in that it spins on its side. It has a large atmosphere and is a cold planet that is four times the size of Earth.
  • Neptune is eighth from the sun and also a very cold planet. Neptune appears blue because of its atmosphere.  It is roughly four times the size of Earth.

ACTIVITY 3:

  • As you draft your stories, look back at your planning organizer to remind yourself of what happens in the middle of your story.
  • Remember to write your events in the order that they happen.
  • One way to make it more interesting and believable is to include dialogue between characters.
  • This is a great technique authors use to show a character’s feelings or what a character is thinking, without being obvious or boring about it.
  • For example, instead of the character saying, “Molly couldn’t wait to get out of the house” (which is fine writing, but a little boring), I could write: “Quick! Let’s go!” Molly shouted as she grabbed her friend’s hand and pulled her towards the door.

  • Neptune is the eighth and furthest planet from the sun.
  • Neptune’s atmosphere gives it a blue color which is fitting with it being named after the Roman god of the sea.
  • Neptune is an ice giant planet. This means it has a gas surface like the gas giant planets, but it has an interior composed mostly of ices and rock.
  • Neptune is slightly smaller than its sister planet Uranus making it the 4th largest planet.

  • Uranus is the 7th planet from the Sun.
  • It is more than twice as far from the Sun as Saturn.
  • Uranus is an ice giant like its sister planet Neptune.
  • Although it has a gas surface, like the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, much of the interior of the planet is made up of frozen elements.
  • As a result, Uranus has the coldest atmosphere of all the planets in the Solar System.
  • The surface of Uranus is made up of mostly hydrogen gas with some helium gas as well. The gas atmosphere makes up about 25% of the planet.
